The Magic of Community: Transforming My World
Have I got a story for you about this crazy thing called community! So let’s rewind a bit - I was always that classic social butterfly, flitting around with a bunch of pals. Friends were a dime a dozen for me! Yeah, I had ups and downs - like that time a girl made fun of me on the school bus. Ouch! But that’s how the cookie crumbles, right?
The real plot twist came in my thirties when I realized what makes a crowd of buddies different from a true community. I mean, we’re all swimming in social media friends, aren’t we? But is that the same as having a community? I don’t think so!
For me, community is something else entirely. It’s deeper, more purposeful. I learned this the hard way - fun fact, I’m a military brat and I’ve moved all around the United States. From South Carolina to Texas, then California and back again. And let me tell you, it was an epic adventure that changed me completely.
I will never forget the first night on my journey to California. It was just me and my Rottweiler, Jake. The enormity of what I was doing hit me - I was leaving my life in Charleston behind. Yeah, FOMO (fear of missing out) as really kicking in!
Fast forward a few months, and I found myself in a tight-knit group that became my community, my family. It was life-changing. When I made the decision to return to the East Coast, leaving my new tribe was nerve-wracking. The first year back was a struggle. I yearned for the authenticity and vulnerability of my California community.
But you know what? Life always has a way of working out. The next year brought soul connections that warmed my heart. It’s been an incredible journey.
So, why am I sharing all of this with you? Well, community has transformed my life in ways I can’t even put into words. And I hope my story encourages you to find your own community, too!
The community didn’t just talk the talk when they said, “Be yourself,” they walked the walk and made it a safe space for me to truly be me.
Have you ever felt like your just playing a part? That’s how I used to feel. Until I found my tribe in California. Sure, I’m a lot to handle. I’m loud, animated, and, let’s face it, pretty dramatic at times. But that’s just who I am. And for the first time, I found a place where I could be completely myself.
Coming back to my old environment, I thought I’d be stepping back into my old life. But that wasn’t the case. I felt more like myself than ever. And it felt phenomenal. I’m not perfect, and I still have moments when I struggle with who I am. But in those moments, I just tune into my true self. And it’s like listening to a beautiful symphony.
Community schooling me on being all about that intentionality life!
Community is about more than just having a group of friends. It’s about being intentional. Sure, spontaneous friendships are great. But what happens when the initial excitement fades? That’s where being intentional is key. It’s about making plans, making an effort, and most importantly, making memories.
Maintaining a connection isn’t always easy. There will be highs and lows. Friends may come and go. But that’s okay. It’s all part of the journey. The key is to take action. If you want to get to know someone, make the effort. If you miss a friend, reach out. Don’t just talk about it, do it.
The community chimed in, declaring, “Being vulnerable is the new safe!”
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that it’s okay to be vulnerable. Not with everyone, of course. But with those you trust. With those who’ve been there for you. Those who’ve seen you at your worst and still stuck around. It’s scary, but it’s worth it. Sharing your deepest fears, your darkest thoughts, your insecurities… it brings you closer. It strengthens the bond.
Community taught me that friendship isn’t just about shared interests, it’s a golden ticket to creating unforgettable memories together.
Friendship is about more than just shared interests or hobbies. It’s about building a history together. It’s about the shared experiences, the shared memories. It’s about showing up, no matter what. Through the good times and the bad, through the highs and the lows. It’s about choosing connection ovr conflict, love over hate.
And remember, community isn’t bound by time or space. It’s not about where you are or how long you’ve known each other. It’s about the bond you share, the connection you have. So whether your friends are right next to you or miles away, cherish them. They are your tribe, your community.
So yeah, that’s my take on community. It’s an adventure, a challenge, and a blessing, all rolled into one. It’s changed my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
So, what’s your story? I’d love to hear your thoughts. How has community shaped your life? Let’s chat about it!
